Facciamo La Scarpetta
Timed with a recent trip to Ostuni, Sorella is an Italian restaurant in a quaint countryside village on the outskirts of Manchester. Inspired by the rustic trattorias of Puglia, Sorella blends honest Italian cuisine with a contemporary dining experience focused on the tactility of food and the materials that resonate with its origin.
The project started during the summer of 2022, and was completed within eight weeks. We took inspiration from our recent travels in the Puglia region and the traditional kitchens we discovered during our stay. These kitchens were often made of natural materials such as stone, marble, and wood and had an aged, imperfect look. We designed the interiors of our restaurant to reflect the eclectic nature of the trattorias in the region. Our cabinets are filled with tableware and other pieces that we collected from antique stores, including vase ware and planters. The subtle lighting throughout the restaurant is designed to create an intimate, candle-lit dining experience that highlights the variation in materials and textures.
Our goal was to blend local craftsmanship and natural materials historically found in both cultures to create a unique aesthetic for the brand, which is tied to the restaurant's location. We designed the branding for the space with a logotype that aligns with the refined, contemporary dining experience. The supporting freehand typography was inspired by handmade pasta and the Italian expression "facciamo la scarpetta" - the ritual of mopping up delicious pasta sauce with fresh bread and highlighting moments of interaction throughout.
