Honouring The Existing
An iconic grade-II listed manor house, built in 1878 and located in rural Cumbria, which was left to dereliction in the year 2000.
Drawing inspiration from the building's ornate architectural features, our approach was sensitive yet contrived, with heavy use of muted tones and soft textures juxtapositioned with monolithic joinery and contemporary finishes that highlighted the contrast between old and new.
We were tasked with our most sensitive project yet - restoring and modernising a historic building for a private client. The goal was to turn the manor house into 14 luxury apartments, while seamlessly blending quintessentially British history with contemporary design. Our brief was to create a strong design narrative that would bring together both new and old.
Our approach was to play with the building’s existing tones, developing them into a muted yet meaningful palette while juxtapositioning historical, gothic architectural features with monolithic joinery pieces.
“YOUTH delivered a well-considered design that has ensured that Stone Cross Manor and its grounds remain a vital heritage asset, restoring its former public glory.
We’re honoured to see Stone Cross recognised in well-known publications such as Dezeen and Frame Magazine, and we’re confident that the building will continue to make its mark for years to come”.
